The clarification was issued on Monday in Kano by the Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi-Waiya, who categorically rejected the allegations and described them as misleading and false.
He stated that the government has not abandoned the library, emphasizing that it is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation project aimed at restoring its historical significance and transforming it into a modern center for learning, research, and intellectual development.
According to Abdullahi-Waiya, the state government awarded the renovation contract to Global Firm Limited. He explained that during the initial phase of work, the contractor removed furniture, bookshelves, and other materials from the upper floor to clear space for rehabilitation activities. These items were temporarily relocated to the ground floor, resulting in the congestion seen in the viral video that sparked public concern.
However, the commissioner acknowledged that the government has expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor’s performance, noting that the firm failed to maintain the required pace of work and has since abandoned the project site.
He confirmed that appropriate measures are being initiated against Global Firm Limited in accordance with contractual terms and due process, stressing that the administration will not tolerate negligence or delays that compromise public infrastructure projects, particularly those linked to education and development.
The commissioner further reiterated that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf remains fully committed to the renovation and modernization of the library to align with contemporary international standards.
He added that upon completion, the facility will be equipped with modern infrastructure, improved reading halls, advanced digital research resources, and a more conducive environment designed to serve students, researchers, academics, and the general public.
The government maintained that the project remains a key priority in its broader agenda to strengthen educational infrastructure and promote intellectual growth across Kano State.
